Modula is a Modular Cellphone Prone to Hardware Upgrades

It’s been a while since we last saw a modular phone, so here’s another bite out of this customizable segment, thanks to the Modula concept handset. Created by Simon Lyons, the cellphone is highly customizable and supports hardware upgrades over the years, once the main phone unit becomes obsolete.
Modula is a Modular Cellphone Prone to Hardware Upgrades
Different modules attached to the phone will assign different new features, ranging from camera, to new connectivity support and extra memory. Modula comes with a 16:9 fingerprint resistant multitouch display, if you’re wondering about its features, plus dual SIM support, stereo speakers and a camera that does video messaging.[via The Design Blog]

Hitachi Futuristic Interface May Not Be All that Sci-Fi (Video)

Our first impulse was to call Hitachi’s fresh technology “Minority Report”-like interface, but there’s a million blogs out there doing the same… Instead, we must say that a source inside the company claimed that a TV with this tech on board might pop up in 2011. How cool is that?
Hitachi Futuristic Interface May Not Be All that Sci Fi (Video)
We’re talking Microsoft Kinect-like interfacing, allowing the user to control any kind of informantion shown on a TV screen simply by waving hands. Video projectors are also supported and apparently this is a working prototype, so it’s past the concept stage. Medical use of the tech has been mentioned, like some sort of hands-free MRI, or showing video footage during surgery without too much emphasis on control.
Owning a TV with Kinect and Hitachi’s tech would make it an option to not leave your house… ever. Scary, huh?

iPhone 5 Wishful Thinking… and Fresh Design

We’ve come across an older piece of CNET’s showing their expectations for the future generation of iPhones, but what we liked most was the concept design of the iPhone 5, created by designedbyitem. Nothing out of the ordinary this time, unlike other crazy designs, but the next-gen Apple handset continues to look well.
iPhone 5 Wishful Thinking... and Fresh Design
As you can see, it’s a bit more rounded than the iPhone 4 and also a bit more curved at the back, if we’re not mistaking. 32GB of memory is the choice for the device, although we’re probably going to see 64 gigs next year, if Steve Jobs is kind enough. Other than that, there’s a camera at the back and one at the front, no megapixels mentioned sadly.

HTC Gemstone is a Luxury Smartphone

What if HTC started making luxury smartphones? Designer Sylvain Gerber sees this as possible and proves with a brand new concept phone, the HTC Gemstone. This is an Android phone with an AMOLED screen and borrowing design elements from HTC Touch Diamond 1 and 2.
HTC Gemstone is a Luxury Smartphone
The metal shell at the back and overall look of the device make it a luxury item and we wouldn’t be surprised if a gem or two made its way onto the handset. An animated graphic is engraved on the back of the smartphone, resembling the shape of gemstones. Pretty neat, right?

Sandwich Phone is a Multi-functional Device, Rotating at 360 Degrees

If you’re looking for a handset that’s also a camera, MP3 player and more, the “Sandwich Phone” concept, created by South Korean designer Yeongwoo Kim is it. As its name says, the device is based on layers, just like a sandwich and each of them is associated to different functions.
Sandwich Phone is a Multi functional Device, Rotating at 360 Degrees

We’re dealing with a multifunctional phone, that includes the features of a normal phone, an MP3 player and camera, in 3 separated layers. The interesting part comes now: the layers are able to rotate on an axis of 360 degrees.

MINIMA Lattice Phone, Created by Seung-Hyon Yoon

Seung-Hyun Yoon created a lattice-style handset, the MINIMA model you can see in the following images. Nothing much to say about this design, aside from the fact that its keyboard is pretty interesting (resembles a lattice) and wood finish is the central theme of the device.
MINIMA Lattice Phone, Created by Seung Hyon Yoon
The organic look of the phone is what the designer is going for and there’s a secondary display camouflage on the outer flip, in case you didn’t notice. Ladies would go crazy for this fashion phone and years ago it would have been a fine addition to the Nokia L’Amour nature-inspired series.

LG Eagle is a Dual Touchscreen Phone With a Sexy Gap

Going back to the past, we uncover a phone design that participated in the LG Design the Future Competition, but didn’t make the top 3. Created by Eugene Kim, the LG Eagle is a dual touchscreen handset, with a sexy gap between its two segments, as shown in the images below.
LG Eagle is a Dual Touchscreen Phone With a Sexy Gap
This stylish phone uses dual multi-touch screens, that provide a nifty gaming experience, one that’s on par with the Nintendo DS. The gap between the two screen segments might make the device a bit thick, but that’s the price you pay for sexy looks. LG Eagle’s exterior features control buttons, so you can operate the device, without flipping it open.

Nagisa Phone Design, a Mac Funamizu Creation

Mac Funamizu is back and he’s delivering an interesting concept phone, the Nagisa, that apparently means “beach” in Japanese. This device is the definition of tranquility and according to the designer, a part of it is made of glass. Mac considers Nagisa a mere phone sketch, so he might tweak the handset later on.
Nagisa Phone Design, a Mac Funamizu Creation (Video)
As you can see, the device is very slim, but its numeric keys manage to stand out on the front side. No trace of a camera on the unit and there’s no port to be seen, so this must be the prototype of a future device. We’re assuming that a minimalistic interface accompanies this minimalistic phone design, but we’ll let you know more once Mac Funamizu finishes the project. More images and info after the break...

Revive Smartphone is a Recyclable Gadget, Prone to Upgrades (Video)

Revive Smartphone is a Recyclable Gadget, Prone to Upgrades (Video)

We’re once again on the green side of things, thanks to a concept smartphone designed with recycling in mind. Dubbed the Revive Smartphone, this unit was created by Kinneir Dufort, while the UI is the work of Duncan Shotton. Revive can be easily disassembled and recycled, with its components being replaced immediately.
Revive Smartphone is a Recyclable Gadget, Prone to Upgrades (Video)
Also, replacing components will help you upgrade the phone and continue its repairs over the years, so basically you’ll keep owning the same device for a long time. There’s also a membership system in the mix, rewarding owners for their long years of handset usage. As far as the design is concerned, Revive uses a curved form factor and a touchscreen display. iPhone 5 Concept Incorporates a Hologram Projector (Video)

Here’s a new iPhone 5 concept, this time not too detailed and relying very much on the video at the end of the article. Created by WaterWorks/ Christopher East, this iPhone design relies on futuristic hologram projections.
iPhone 5 Concept Incorporates a Hologram Projector (Video)
Such mechanisms will be used to turn the iPhone 5 into the perfect presentation tool, specially for architects, car, boat designers and whatnot. Combine that holographic ability with the power of Office PowerPoint and you’ve got productivity nirvana… or do you?
As you can see in the video, you can control the hologram via gestures. Nifty, right?

Samsung Galaxy Eclipse, Envisioned by 12 Year Old

Some folks keep criticizing us for publishing concepts that look bad, sketches of devices that look as if they were drawn by kids and so on… Well, we aim to show you everything, the good and the bad and let you be the judges. How about we cut a kid some slack this time and check out the Samsung Galaxy Eclipse, a concept phone created by 12 year old Ali Siddiqui.
Samsung Galaxy Eclipse, Envisioned by 12 Year Old
Don’t be that harsh and try to remember what you were drawing when you were 12… I must’ve been doodling at the time, to be honest. Not much to say about the Eclipse, aside from the fact that it’s probably going to become real, since the Galaxy S was hugely successful and it’ll probably have a QWERTY follow-up. Mozilla Seabird Concept Smartphone Uses Projectors

Mozilla Labs have recently spawned a new definition of coolness, thanks to a new concept phone dubbed Seabird. Initially created by Billy May, the handset was later developed with the aid of the community gathered around his project on the Mozilla Labs website. The result is the stunning device pictured below:
Mozilla Seabird Concept Smartphone Uses Projectors, Overdose of Coolness (Video)
There’s also a video at the end of the article, that totally blew our mind. It shows the Seabird and its features, that include an 8MP camera, dual pico projectors, a 960 x 600 pixel screen, wireless charging and an embedded Bluetooth dongle. Said dongle is also a headset with haptic clicking support and usable as some sort of remote for the device. More info and images after the break...

Ubuntu Shine is an Open Source Mobile Covered in Gold

Here’s another piece of work by Terrillo Walls, this time a smartphone based on Ubuntu. Dubbed the Ubuntu Shine, the device is also pretty special and precious, as it uses gold plating for its back cover. On the front side there’s a super high resolution AMOLED display.
Ubuntu Shine is an Open Source Mobile Covered in Gold
Under the hood we learn that Terrillo imagined an NVIDIA Tegra 2 mobile GPU and possibly lots of RAM and ROM. This incredibly thin device looks promising and keeps the design typical for the man behind the project (large touchscreen, very thin device, minimalistic look). More images after the break...

Scope Collapsible Mobile Phone is Tiny, Comfy

FORMBOTEN created a pretty interesting handset design, the Scope cellphone, pictured below. This phone concept collapses into a tinier shape, as shown in the image and it’s based on physical numeric buttons, instead of the usual touchscreen we keep seeing on new devices.
Scope Collapsible Mobile Phone is Tiny, Comfy
You can pop the handset open in order to access its keypad, or close it for a more compact phone and the most basic of tasks accessed via front buttons. This cellphone looks a bit like Sony Ericsson material, although it lacks the company’s branding.

HTC HDD is Back: Finished Design and Specs Available Now!

Antoine Brieux showed us a teaser of the promising HTC Touch HD Dual (HTC HDD) last week and now he’s back with the final version of the concept. Don’t expect to see this handset in shops, since it’s only a mere design, but maybe HTC will use it as an inspiration for its future projects. Click on the following images to see them enlarged:
HTC HDD is Back: Finished Design and Specs Available Now!
This multi OS device comes with impressive specs, like 1080p video recording, HDMI connectivity, screen optimization and a hard buttons manager detailed below. Also, the full specifications list is mentioned in the last image, with the most impressive feats being the 1.5GHz dual core Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU, 10 megapixel camera with dual LED flash and 4G connectivity. Russian Dual Display Phone Prototype Caught on Camera

Prototypes are the next step, when it comes to phone concepts, so we’re pleased to have spotted a brand new handset, coming from Russia. Sadly, the device is a mere mockup for now, a prototype made of plastic with the picture of its UI slapped on top of the front screen. We’re dealing with dual display smartphone made by a company funded by the local government.
Russian Dual Display Phone Prototype Caught on Camera (Video)
Russian president Dmitry Medvedev was caught on camera handling such a device, of course in prototype phase, as shown in the video below. The handset is a 4G phone, with Android on board, a front display and another screen at the back. Rumors say that one of the screens will use LCD technology, while the other one will be based on E Ink.
The device’s launch should take place in 2011 or so…

HTC Fusion, the Android Version of the HTC HD Pro Design

Jason Wang, the man responsible with the beautiful HTC HD Pro concept has recently posted online an Android version of the device, that’s pretty sweet-looking. The device features a 3.7 inch touch display and it uses a bit of the HTC Desire/Nexus One form factor, combined with a resilient aluminum case (the one on HTC Legend).
HTC Fusion, the Android Version of the HTC HD Pro Design
The “core” of this concept is the glass strip at the back of the phone, used to allow the wireless radio to “breathe” inside the handset’s shell. Also, the glass section is a bit indented from the rest of the case, so scratching and cracking won’t happen, plus the grip will stay pretty good. The same section is an interesting way of embedding the camera and flash (and an elegant one). More info and images after the break...

iHolo Futuristic Cellphone Relies on Holograms, Revolutionary UI

It seems futuristic interfaces and cellphones are trendy this week, since we’ve just come across the iHolo concept, just after seeing a very interesting prototype that also involved a sci-fi UI. Created by Kingyo xie, the iHolo cellphone relies on holographic imaging for content display and interaction.
iHolo Futuristic Cellphone Relies on Holograms, Revolutionary UI
Touchscreen, infrared and Bluetooth are also featured and the device is able to project its menus on any flat surface and probably with a pretty good diagonal. iHolo supports HD video playback, dynamic screen adjustment and a flexible user interface. The gaming experience on this gizmo will be great, as shown by the screenshots below. More info and images after the break...

SoftBank’s Information Revolution Concept is Scary, Brings Together Final Fantasy

If you’ve seen Minority Report, Surrogates, Gamer (the movies) and played a Final Fantasy title with futuristic setting, you know what to expect from the following video. We’ve discovered it on Mac Funamizu’s blog, as he was the one who designed the user interface for a future computer, in the SoftBank Information Revolution video. Here’s how it looks like:
SoftBanks Information Revolution Concept is Scary, Brings Together Final Fantasy, Minority Report and Gamer (Video)
We have to say that the future looks a bit scary, but the interface concept is really neat, sort of like a carousel UI taken to the next level. The thing is that you’ll interact with computers via touch, but also (as we get it) via thought and eye contact. Voice control is also in there, we bet. More info and images after the break...

HTC Touch HD Dual is a Windows Phone 7-Based Design

You must have heard about Antoine Brieux, who has been present on our blog on numerous occasions, due to his innovative designs. Now he’s created the HTC Touch HD Dual smartphone also known as the HTC HDD and confused by some blogs with the already existing HTC HD7. Here it is:
HTC Touch HD Dual is a Windows Phone 7 Based Design
This mysterious handset runs Windows Phone 7, as seen in the image, but it’s also multi OS capable, so Android, Symbian and other platforms will be supported on it. Plus, they don’t call it HD for nothing, so it should support at least HD video capture, HD video playback and HD video out, right? Considering how bulky this phone is, an embedded projector would be no surprise.
What do you think? Is this project even a bit close to reality?

Nokia U Concept: The Public Has Chosen the “Design by Community” Smartphone Design

Remember the Nokia initiative entitled “Design by Community” that involved the public’s selection of specs and design features for a future Nokia smartphone? Well, it came down to these three sketches last time we heard about it and the finalized result of the challenge is the Nokia U device, pictured below.
Nokia U Concept: The Public Has Chosen the Design by Community Smartphone Design
This Nokia concept phone is the result of over 18,000 votes that chose a sketch of the phone in order for the handset maker’s design team to turn into a render. This is the render we’ve been waiting for, complete with the specs listed below: More info and images after the break...

Sony Ericsson Plexus Adopts Froyo as Its OS

Frank Tobias from the Esato board is back with a Sony Ericsson concept, the Plexus model, pictured below. We have no info on the device’s specs, but we can speculate that they include at least a 600 MHz CPU, 3G connectivity, Android 2.2 (that’s been confirmed by the designer), Bluetooth, WiFi and at least a 5MP camera at the back.
Sony Ericsson Plexus Adopts Froyo as Its OS
Frank Tobias promised to deliver the specifications for the concept device later on. Sony Ericsson Plexus is looking hot right now and we wonder if there’s a sliding mechanism under that touchscreen, since the handset is kinda thick.

Sharp Showcases 3D Cameraphone Concept at IFA 2010

IFA 2010 was a pretty good time to spot concept phones in Berlin, like the device pictured below. Made by Sharp, this cameraphone prototype supports 3D image capture and 3D playback. The handset looks very much like an iPhone 4/Samsung Galaxy S hybrid with a touch of the Fujifilm Real 3D W3 camera, featuring two sensors at the back.
Sharp Showcases 3D Cameraphone Concept at IFA 2010
Just like the Nintendo 3DS, this device is based on a lenticular lens, allowing users to view 3D content without those pesky glasses. Sharp says that this 3D display phone is coming before the year end and it’s supposed to feature a 3 inch screen. The company also wants to bring this technology to higher diagonal units, reaching up to 10.1 inches so 3D tablets are also included. More info and images after the break...

New PSP Phone Design is Based on Sony Mylo 2

As we’re getting closer to what may be the launch of the very first PSP Phone, there’s another nifty concept of the device to glance at. Pictured below, the PSP Phone design made by iSuriv is based on the Sony Mylo 2 combined with a PSP and an XPERIA handset.
New PSP Phone Design is Based on Sony Mylo 2
The supposed specs of the device include a 5 inch Super AMOLED screen, a Cortex A9 CPU, WiFi and Bluetooth 3.0 connectivity, plus 4G and an accelerometer. iSuriv also wants an accelerometer on the console phone, a proximity sensor, a light sensor and gyroscope. The internal memory will be 8/16GB, accompanied by a microSD slot, while the camera at the back will be an 8MP unit with LED flash and capable of 720p video recording. more info and images after the break...

iPhone 5 Concept, Possibly the Very First One!

We all know that the iPhone 4 was very much a failure, compared to the previous Apple handsets, so the need for a new device to repair the brand is great. Thus, we give you the iPhone 5 concept, the very first of its kind, unless there’s some other design out there.
iPhone 5 Concept, Possibly the Very First One!
For starters, the new iPhone will get rid of the antenna issues and it’ll be extremely flat, as seen in the image above. On the left side you’ll find a touch volume control mechanism, well, the entire left side will serve for that purpose, to be more precise. You’ll move your finger from bottom to top in order to reduce the volume.
iPhone 5 supports 4G connectivity (100 Mb/s in download) and it comes with adjustable backlight and the same great Retina Display on the iPhone. The camera at the back will be a 10.2 megapixel unit and the internal memory will be either 32GB or 64GB. A better battery will also be in the mix. What do you say? A mere project or something close to reality?

T-mobile G2 Official Specs and Release Date | Review Coming Soon!

It has been almost two years now since T-Mobile’s first Android-based phone G1 was released in the market. Because of this and the rapid changes happening in the tech world many believes that the G1 needs a refresh. This is why the T-Mobile G2 is coming our way very soon.
Article 194 pic 1 T mobile G2 Official Specs and Release Date | Review Coming Soon!
We have heard about the T-Mobile G2 a few months ago. Lately, three new images of this upcoming phone have showed up. These images showed off the front and side view of the upcoming G2 handset and clearly indicate that it will be running a vanilla build of the Android 2.2 operating system. More info after the break...
T-Mobile is calling the G2 as “fastest smartphone experience in America”. However, results show that its Qualcomm Scorpion processor is relatively slow. In addition to that, the G2’s MSM7×30 chip will be clocked at 800MHz rather than 1GHz, which is definitely better. Although we’re not concluding that T-Mobile might be lying about the G2’s speed, but it’s more of saying that it didn’t just turn out to be what most of us have expected.
T-Mobile likewise confirmed that the T-Mobile G2 would come with a Flash Flayer 10.1 as well as “one-touch quick keys” which will enable a fast access to various Google apps and shortcuts. Aside from this, the G2 is also expected to come up with the HTC Sense UI. There are some Android fans that have some complaints about this UI, but overall many still finds the HTC’s Sense UI to be a lot better than other UI’s out there.via
Since we have seen this phone before in many gadget websites, the specs and features we have mentioned are no longer a surprise. And as compared with the previous images of this upcoming handset, its latest images look far better and more appealing as well.
The T-Mobile G2 is apparently T-Mobile’s first HSPA+ smartphone to hit the market. T-Mobile is expected to give more information regarding its price as well as its availability date. Although there is some rumors that this smartphone will be offered for $199.99 with a contract and about $ 499.99 without a contract.via
