The central processing unit (CPU) is part of a computer system that executes instructions of a computer program, and is the main factor to perform the functions of the computer. CPU to execute each instruction program order, to perform basic arithmetic, logic and input / output system. This term is used for the computer industry since at least 1960. Shape, design and implementation of CPUs have changed dramatically in the first, but their main function remains the same.

The first processors are designed specifically as part of a larger, sometimes one-of-kind, computer. However, this costly method of designing custom CPUs for a particular application, has led to the development series of processors that are made for one or more purposes. This standardization trend began in the era of mainframes and minicomputers of discrete transistors and has accelerated greatly to the popularization of the integrated circuit (IC). The IC has allowed increasingly complex processors to be designed and manufactured to tolerances of a few nanometers. Both the miniaturization and standardization of CPUs have increased the presence of these digital devices in modern life far beyond the limited application of dedicated computers. Modern microprocessors appear in everything from cars to cell phones and toys for children. source
