Nokia MeeGo Smartphone to Break the Ice?

We’re all waiting for the savior of the Nokia brand, that superphone to rule them all or at least a decent piece of machinery that should run MeeGo and look half as good as the iPhone 4. It could look something like this, but Nokia might want to save some MeeGo love for its (maybe) upcoming tablet.
Nokia MeeGo Smartphone to Break the Ice?
As you’ve seen for yourself, the public wants big screen diagonals, tons of memory (or at least a card slot that’s generous), a powerful CPU, an open OS with multitasking and a pretty good camera. Symbian^3 and even Symbian^4 don’t seem to have what it takes to make a smartphone good enough to sell millions of units in weeks, like Samsung Galaxy S or HTC EVO 4G…
What does Nokia need to pair with its MeeGo OS to make the new device appealing?

Eking Shows Multitouch MID Render

Eking is a company that doesn’t ring any bells, at least not to us, but apparently they’re preparing a new UMPC/MID, available as a render now. The concept MID relies on the Intel Atom platform and should pack a  5 inch 1024 x 600 multitouch display made by Sharp. WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS and 3G support are also on board.
Eking Shows Multitouch MID Render
The device’s display is able to slide and tilt and underneath it you’ll find a full QWERTY keyboard. Also, the UMPC can be used when closed, thanks to its bezel controls. Expect this unit to run Windows 7, if it becomes real and we must mention there’s also a webcam included upfront.

Nokia Shows Its Sharpest Phone Sketches: You Pick One!

Nokia’s Design by Community initiative is back with 3 phone sketches, that show the future device that the Finns will turn into a real 3D unit. The design is subject to public vote over here, but you can leave an input in the comment section below, too, if you want. We remind you that Nokia’s designers have taken into account all of the public’s feedback and created these 3 handsets.
Nokia Shows Its Sharpest Phone Sketches: You Pick One!
There was a specifications list to serve as a guide to the designers and it included a 4 inch capacitive 16:9 display, a monoblock shape, aluminium case, soft touch finish, super strength durability and an open source OS with multitasking (unlimited).

Shape-shifting Cellphone Prototype, Shown in Action (Video)

We deal mostly with phone designs on our site, but sometimes prototypes are worth checking out as well, with the best example being the following shape-shifting handset. Designed and shown in action by Fabian Hemmert, the prototype was demoed during the TEDxBerlin show in 2009.
Shape shifting Cellphone Prototype, Shown in Action (Video)
The handset is based on a weight-shifting technology, that alters the center of gravity of the unit and implements feedback-based navigation. The result is a shape-changing phone that allows the users to adjust its thickness by interacting with its four corners. One of the prototypes involves a heartbeat-like pulse, used to communicate information, also showing the device’s battery life. more images and info after the break...

New Taste of Windows Phone 7 Interface

Jozef Kocúr reveals a new idea of his, a version of the Windows Phone 7 interface, pictured below. This concept UI is more about customizing the already known aspects of the OS, by adding them what would be needed on a future XPERIA smartphone. More ideas like this can be found here.

NAK HD is a Dual Core 1.2 GHz Snapdragon-Based Smartphone

We’ve seen previous NAK concept phones, created by designer Antoine Brieux, but this time he has outdone himself. The line between MID, tablet and smartphone is blurred by the new NAK HD handset, pictured below and packed with the best of specs. The 11mm thick machine relies on a dual core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU and uses two displays.
NAK HD is a Dual Core 1.2 GHz Snapdragon Based Smartphone
The front screen is a 4.5 inch AMOLED multitouch capacitive display, while the internal display measures 4.8 inches in diagonal and it’s a LED non-touchscreen unit with a 16:9 ratio. NAK HD also features 1GB RAM, 1GB ROM, 16GB internal memory, a microSD card slot, an 8 megapixel camera with dual LED flash, a front videocall camera and HDMI out.

Crescent Sentinel HT1 Double Screen Phone

Jonathan De Jesus created the Crescent Sentinel HT1 double screen phone concept, pictured below and featuring some interesting specs. Although we don’t quite understand much from this design, we’re pleased with the details regarding the device: 2GHz CPU, Windows 7 or Google interface and more.
Crescent Sentinel HT1 Double Screen Phone, Created by Jonathan De Jesus
It’ll also support 4G connectivity, WiFi, thumb recognition and an incorporate an iris scanner. Its keyboard will be an LED one and the handset will be as thin as the iPhone. Future Crescent phones created by Jonathan De Jesus might rely on holographic technology.
As far as security is concerned, the phone will come with a tracking device inside, so once you visit the crescentmobile site, you’ll discover the location of your handset. What do you think about this device?
[Thanks Jonathan]

LG Exo Phone, a Sustainable and Durable Handset

Designer Benjamin Lotte created the LG Exo concept phone, a handset based on an interesting idea: a skeletal system that protects the parts inside the device. Yes, the LG Exo is a resilient piece of gadgetry with a high strength polymer exosketelon that protects its inner parts and supports the external rubber skin.
LG Exo Phone, a Sustainable and Durable Handset
Exo comes with a curved body, enhanced ergonomics and great strength. It also incorporates a flexible OLED display, making the phone even more resilient to shocks and interactions. Overall, this LG handset is able to withstand any kind of damage, thanks to its external shell, always kept in pristine conditions.

XPERIA XTab, Smartphone Concept Becomes a Tablet

Esato board user juris15 created a bunch of fine XPERIA concepts lately and now he turns to the tablet segment, creating the XPERIA XTab device. The slate is not big enough to be called a true tablet, but it’s in the range of the Dell Streak and other similar products. As you can see, it sports a sliding QWERTY keyboard and an incredibly slim design.
XPERIA XTab, Smartphone Concept Becomes a Tablet
I’m not so sure about the tablet’s front side, as it doesn’t look that convincing, specially with the front buttons looking like they were drawn in a hurry. Also, the colour choice could have been different. With some minor facade modifications this Sony Ericsson tablet could be worth a shot....

HTC HD Pro is a Worthy HTC HD2 Successor

First things first: the HTC HD Pro is NOT a real device, so don’t bother asking for prices. This HTC concept looks like Windows Phone 7 material and we learn that it comes with an aluminum body, with a glass panel at the back, used to protect the camera lens. Said protection is due to “an electrochromic film”.
HTC HD Pro is a Worthy HTC HD2 Successor
The smartphone design is only 11.5mm thick and the screen is a 4.3 inch capacitive display, the same size of the HTC HD2 screen. There’s also a 1500 mAh battery in the mix and you get all the connectivity options you need on the HTC HD Pro: 3.5mm audio jack, a microUSB port and a mini HDMI out for external display connections.
This device was created by Jukah and you can check out his Deviantart portofolio here, if you’re interested. Keep in mind that this designer also intends to create a Google Nexus Two and HTC HD3 concept, so we’ll keep him under observation. Great job, for now!

Nokia Kinetic Concept is Able to Stand Up On its Own!

British designer Jeremy Hopkins decided to create an unique phone concept, Nokia Kinetic, that turns digital information into kinetic energy. What does this mean? Well, basically, the phone will stand up on its own, once you get a notification, thanks to a kinetic energy-based system.
Nokia Kinetic Concept is Able to Stand Up On its Own!
This is a 2009 design, with the Nokia phone using a classic mini USB port, a camera, speaker and a bulky lower side. The front side looks like a hybrid between the N81 and iPhone 4 and if you’re wondering about the whole “standing up” thing, know that the device relies on an electromagnet. This mechanism is placed at its based and shifts the phone’s weight, to keep it upright...

Sony Ericsson XPERIA XTX1 Pro Adds a QWERTY Keyboard to the Original Design

Esato board user juris15 decided to add something extra to his XPERIA XTX1 concept phone, so he created a Pro version, that sports a QWERTY keyboard. The device still packs a 12 megapixel camera, accompanied by flash, HD video capture and, if we’re not mistaking, modified front keys beneath the screen.
Sony Ericsson XPERIA XTX1 Pro Adds a QWERTY Keyboard to the Original Design
The display on the XTX1 Pro looks great and it’s got to be at least 3.7 inches in diagonal. The XPERIA also comes with a front camera and it sliding keyboard looks pretty usable, although it’s strange that the screen part is smaller than the keyboard part.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA XTX1 Design Packs an Exmor 12MP Camera

Pairing up the XPERIA brand with a 12 megapixel camera and changing the front buttons on the smartphone is a bold move, but Esato board user juris15 wasn’t afraid to pull it off. The result? The XPERIA XTX1 concept, that you can check out in the following images.
The Sony Ericsson design shows a handset with a front camera, a 3.5mm audio jack, a 12.25 megapixel camera with an Exmor sensor and support for HD video capture. HDMI out is also on board and we have to mention that the designer doesn’t quite like the front buttons, so if you’ve got suggestions, feel free to post them in the comments section.........

Windows Phone 7 Concept Interface is Something Sony Ericsson Would Dig

Windows Phone 7 Concept Interface is Something Sony Ericsson Would Dig
Jozef Kocúr created a very interesting Windows Phone 7 concept interface, that would look good on an XPERIA high end device in the future. Notice the changes in the homescreen, the Aero integration, the simple status bar, a new Music plus Video tile and original user themes. Would Microsoft accept such a high degree of customization?.......

HTC 1 Concept Created by Andrew Kim Would Look Good in Real Life

Every once in a while we come across a concept cellphone that we feel will be turned into reality some day. This is also the case of Andrew Kim’s HTC 1 handset, pictured below. The designer who created this device wants more from the UI and hardware harmony of HTC phones, so he took matters into his own hands.
HTC 1 Concept Created by Andrew Kim Would Look Good in Real Life
HTC 1 is a premium smartphone that runs Android, a very slim unit, with a rectangular body shape, inspired by Leica’s cameras. The device is made from machined brass, in order to look good, no matter how old it gets. Also, it incorporates a hidden speaker and an original stand, plus a tough overall build..........

Consolor Portable Console Design, Created by Joseph Dumary

It’s been a while since we’ve seen a brand new console design, so we can only say we’re enjoying Joseph Dumary’s creation, pictured below. We’re talking about the Consolor portable console concept, a HD system that fits in your pocket, supporting multitasking and multimedia features.

Samsung i9200 Galaxy S2 Gets Rendered; Just Another 2GHz Smartphone…

Smartphones with 2GHz CPUs seem to be the new trend, as we’ve seen a Motorola concept with such a processing power just days ago and now a Samsung unit promises to deliver the same. We’ve stumbled upon the following render of the Samsung i9200 Galaxy S2, a design that would fit such a powerful device.
Samsung i9200 Galaxy S2 Gets Rendered; Just Another 2GHz Smartphone...

Gravity Phone is a HD Handset With Flat Screen Incorporated

Created by 4 designers, the Gravity Phone concept is based on HD playback technology and a high definition flat screen, that would even make television sets jealous. This device is the work of Toni Weichselbraun, Lukas Doenz, Joachim Kornauth and Max Salesse.
Gravity Phone is a HD Handset With Flat Screen Incorporated
The Gravity Phone is not exactly a handset that would fit in the pocket of your pants, since we expect its diagonal to pass the 4 inch mark. Also, we learn that the unit comes with upgradeable components, that can be plugged in and out and switched, meaning that this is a customizable gadget....

Blue Bee Phone Interface Concept is Simplistic and Intuitive

Kingyo created a very interesting handset interface, dubbed the Blue Bee, that also comes with an appealing and very slim smartphone. As you can see, the UI looks a bit like the Windows Mobile 6.5 interface and it requires a large touchscreen to operate and there’s no need for any physical button, at all.
Blue Bee Phone Interface Concept is Simplistic and Intuitive
An interesting idea is placing a touchpad at the back of the phone’s body, like many supposed we’d see on the iPhone 4. Said touchpad would extend the display to almost the entire body of the handset and provide more screen space and means of interaction. The touch panel on the side behind is operable as shown in the last image included in the article.......

Mystery Tablet Design Needs a Branding! Ideas?

Designer Frank Tobias created a brand new tablet concept, but he couldn’t decide on the branding of the device, yet. Also, he has a hard time choosing the UI and OS for the unit (Windows Phone 7, Android, Windows 7 etc). Any suggestions?
Mystery Tablet Design Needs a Branding! Ideas?
We have to mention that the tablet features a 3.5mm audio jack, 2 USB ports on the right side, a 10 megapixel camera with HD video recording and a triple LED flash. HTC would certainly fit this device, or maybe Motorola? How about Dell? Ideas?.....
