Nokia MeeGo Smartphone to Break the Ice?

We’re all waiting for the savior of the Nokia brand, that superphone to rule them all or at least a decent piece of machinery that should run MeeGo and look half as good as the iPhone 4. It could look something like this, but Nokia might want to save some MeeGo love for its (maybe) upcoming tablet.

As you’ve seen for yourself, the public wants big screen diagonals, tons of memory (or at least a card slot that’s generous), a powerful CPU, an open OS with multitasking and a pretty good camera. Symbian^3 and even Symbian^4 don’t seem to have what it takes to make a smartphone good enough to sell millions of units in weeks, like Samsung Galaxy S or HTC EVO 4G…

Eking Shows Multitouch MID Render

Eking is a company that doesn’t ring any bells, at least not to us, but apparently they’re preparing a new UMPC/MID, available as a render now. The concept MID relies on the Intel Atom platform and should pack a  5 inch 1024 x 600 multitouch display made by Sharp. WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS and 3G support are also on board.

The device’s display is able to slide and tilt and underneath it you’ll find a full QWERTY keyboard. Also, the UMPC can be used when closed, thanks to its bezel controls. Expect this unit to run Windows 7, if it becomes real and we must mention there’s also a webcam included upfront.

Sony Ericsson W10i, Smartphone Version of the W902

Designer Frank Tobias has created a brand new SE handset, pictured below: Sony Ericsson W10i, the smartphone version of the W902 model. As described by the creator of the concept on his website, this phone sports a 10 megapixel camera with LED flash, HD video recording and WiFi.

Nokia Shows Its Sharpest Phone Sketches: You Pick One!

Nokia’s Design by Community initiative is back with 3 phone sketches, that show the future device that the Finns will turn into a real 3D unit. The design is subject to public vote over here, but you can leave an input in the comment section below, too, if you want. We remind you that Nokia’s designers have taken into account all of the public’s feedback and created these 3 handsets.

There was a specifications list to serve as a guide to the designers and it included a 4 inch capacitive 16:9 display, a monoblock shape, aluminium case, soft touch finish, super strength durability and an open source OS with multitasking (unlimited).

Shape-shifting Cellphone Prototype, Shown in Action (Video)

We deal mostly with phone designs on our site, but sometimes prototypes are worth checking out as well, with the best example being the following shape-shifting handset. Designed and shown in action by Fabian Hemmert, the prototype was demoed during the TEDxBerlin show in 2009.

The handset is based on a weight-shifting technology, that alters the center of gravity of the unit and implements feedback-based navigation. The result is a shape-changing phone that allows the users to adjust its thickness by interacting with its four corners. One of the prototypes involves a heartbeat-like pulse, used to communicate information, also showing the device’s battery life. more images and info after the break...
